Federal law requires that every Medigap plan with the same letter provides the exact same benefits, regardless of which insurance company sells it. Plan G from Aetna covers the same things as Plan G from Mutual of Omaha. The only difference between carriers is the price, financial strength, and customer service experience.
Plan G is the most popular Medigap plan letter for new enrollees in {year}. Since Plan F was closed to new beneficiaries after 2019, Plan G has become the go-to choice for people who want comprehensive coverage with minimal out-of-pocket costs. Plan N is the second most popular choice, especially for people who want lower premiums and don’t mind small copays.
You can apply to switch your Medigap plan at any time, but outside of your initial Medigap Open Enrollment Period (the 6-month window starting when you turn 65 and enroll in Part B), insurance companies in most states can use medical underwriting to decide whether to accept you. This means health conditions could affect your ability to switch. Starting with the right plan letter is important.
It depends on your healthcare usage and risk tolerance. Plan G costs more per month but leaves you with virtually no out-of-pocket costs beyond the Part B deductible. Plan N has lower premiums but includes small copays (up to $20 for office visits, $50 for non-admitted ER visits) and does not cover Part B excess charges. If you see doctors frequently or want maximum predictability, Plan G is typically the better choice. If you’re healthy and want to save on premiums, Plan N can be an excellent value.
The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015 eliminated Plan F and Plan C for people who became newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. If you were eligible for Medicare before that date, you can still enroll in Plan F. For everyone else, Plan G offers nearly identical coverage — the only difference is that Plan G doesn’t cover the annual Part B deductible ({cost:part_b_deductible} in {year}).
No. Medigap plans do not cover prescription drugs. If you choose a Medigap plan, you’ll need to enroll in a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan to get drug coverage. This is different from Medicare Advantage, which often includes drug coverage in the plan.
The quiz evaluates your answers against the same factors a licensed advisor would consider: how frequently you see doctors, whether you travel, your comfort level with copays, your budget sensitivity, and your general health outlook. It then matches your profile to the plan letter that best balances coverage and cost for your situation.
The quiz is 100% free. You can complete it and see your recommendation without entering any personal information. At the end, there’s an optional form where you can request to speak with a licensed UMA advisor — but it’s entirely your choice. If you don’t fill out the form, no one will contact you.
