Set Up For Success: Make Your Space Match Your Lifestyle

Many people spend years working hard and planning for their ideal retirement activities, whether it’ll include traveling, gardening, reading books, knitting, socializing, exercising, or something else. While most people plan for the financial elements of post-retirement life, they often overlook the psychological elements. A sudden change in a long-followed routine can be overwhelming for many people.

Productivity and motivation in retirement depend on making changes. Adopting hobbies and activities and following them takes consistent motivation, especially when you are changing your lifestyle after so long.

Here are some helpful tips on how you can stay motivated and make your space match your new, retired lifestyle.

Find a New Meaning and Purpose

The first step to making a positive lifestyle involves accepting that things will change. Our careers help us feel useful, productive, and purposeful. In retirement, you must make your own purpose. A positive way to look at the situation is that you can finally do the things you missed doing because of work.

Adopt an activity or a hobby that enriches your life and makes you feel good. Be it community service work, developing a new skill, or starting a new hobby, it should make you feel engaged and active.

Find Your Passion and Start Working on It

Many people struggle with finding something to do after retirement. Give yourself a break, and talk to your friends and colleagues about it. Most of all, give yourself time to determine what you are really passionate about and how you can pursue it. An activity you’re passionate about is a motivator itself.

Start with a Set Daily Routine

For a lot of people, following a set schedule serves as a source of motivation. That’s because it clears up confusion and indecisiveness about what you should do. Select any activity that you want to pursue and include in your daily lifestyle. Make a schedule that reflects how much time you’re willing to spend on that hobby.

For example, start with something simple, like exercise. When you wake up, put in half an hour of exercise to get energized. Then, enjoy a healthy breakfast, and move on to your next activity. As you go about your day, tick things off the list as you do them.

This will keep you motivated to achieve your next target. You can also modify your activity chart to add in daily activities.

Learn a New Thing Every Week

Set a target to learn something new every week. Try learning things online through your local community college or an online membership. Write an improvement report at the end of every day or week. This will keep you motivated to achieve new goals and learn something new as a result!

Tick Things off Your Bucket List

If you made a bucket list of projects while you were working, retirement is the perfect time to start completing them! Create an activity log and set small goals for yourself. They can be as simple as planting a kitchen garden, reading one chapter of the book, spending the weekend at the beach house, etc. You can even hang up the activity log chart somewhere you can see so that it stays as a reminder and a motivator.

Make Changes to Your Space

Embracing a hobby and actually fulfilling it are two different things. It is very important to have motivators so you can gain a sense of fulfillment from your hobby. For example, if you want to start gardening, fill your shed with the required utensils and seeds that you need.

Once you have all the things you need, you won’t have any obstacles. If you want to start exercising, make sure that your mat is just around the corner and your workout video is one click away. If you want to go fishing, ensure that your boat is all set up and your fishing rod has fresh wires.

Set up Bi-Weekly Club Meetings at Your Home

Get socially active and surround yourself with people who are going through a similar phase of life. Socializing will help you to stay motivated, especially when other people around you are also pursuing similar activities. For instance, you can hold weekly meetings to discuss the book you all decided to read.

You can meet at the park to exercise together; or travel, meet new people, and make friends. Socializing itself is a very useful motivator to complete the tasks and goals you’ve set for yourself.

Make Space for Your Wood-Work Table

Create a setup that can eventually lead to you completing orders for other people. If you miss your passion of working with wood, use your garage or shed space to finally start pursuing your passion. Purchase different types of wood, buy the tools, and think of the first thing you would like to create. You can even breathe new life into your old furniture!

Order your New Table and Write Every Day

You have worked hard and earned enough to live a stress-free life. Having a positive outlook on your post-retirement life is very important. Now is the time to continue writing where you left off.

Get some help in setting up your writing station. You can even set up two writing stations and choose where you’d like to work according to your mood. For instance, you can place one table in your backyard, and one indoors. Keep some papers, pens, and writing tools on your desk, along with some flowers to lighten up your mood whenever you see them. Place a laptop for when you get bored of writing on paper.

If it helps, start writing one thing that made you happy that day. You will learn how it is the little things that matter the most. You’ll begin to notice how you were so distracted by your work life that everything started to revolve around it. Creating physical motivators to continue with your hobbies and activities has proven to be very helpful. It is easier to get distracted, but with the right motivators, it’s easier to focus on what you want to do.
