Medicare Supplement Plan J was once one of the most popular choices for beneficiaries seeking a high level of coverage. It was, in fact, the highest level of coverage you could get with a Medicare Supplement plan. Unfortunately, Medigap Plan J is no longer available. So, what happened?
Why was was Medigap Plan J removed?
When Congress passed the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, the structure of Medicare was forever altered. Among other things, this act signaled the beginning of Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage). Because Plan J included coverage for prescription drugs, the advent of Medicare Part D made the Plan outdated.
If I have a Plan J, what should I do?
First of all, you do not have to do anything. All enrollees in an expired plan (including Plan J) are able to keep their plan with no loss of benefits. That said, we always recommend comparison shopping so you can be confident you’re not overpaying for coverage. For those who are looking to keep a similar level of coverage as Plan J, you may want to consider Medicare Supplement Plan G or Plan N.
